Out Loud

Out Loud
When do babies generally start laughing out loud?

I have a 4 month old little boy who smiles all the time but he still hasn’t laughed out loud, at least not for me. His sitter says he has but I haven’t heard anything yet. I can’t wait for the moment that he giggles for the first time. Also, when I pick him up at the sitters I am expecting a big smile like he is happy to see me, but I hardly ever get one. It it starting to discourage me like maybe he doesn’t care to see me? I know it sounds crazy, but I was just wondering if anyone else out there ever felt the same way? I feel like he likes is babysitter more than he likes me!

Try not to take it personally. I’ve been on both sides. My daughter is around lots of people and has very little attachment to me. She does great with the in laws, with my family, with dad. I go to school a couple of nights a week and up until recently (she is 6.5 months old) she didn’t even really notice when I came home. I was expecting that big smile of recognition, and I wasn’t getting it. My daughter started to really chuckle maybe around five months. My mother inlaw videotaped her laughing so hard with her aunt and I still have only been able to make her laugh that way once. It made me think the same thing, maybe grandma is better than me. The plus is that she is so adaptable. I’ve talked to others moms who can’t leave the room without the baby screaming. I don’t know if I want to be on that side of the pendulum either.
I’ve also been the babysitter. I really think that if you are working alot you might be feeling guilty about not spending enough time with your son and then looking for the signs that your baby still recognizies you as mom. He does and he will show it soon. He is still very young. Ask your babysitter how she makes him giggle. Make sure you spend some quality time with him not only for his sake, but for yours. As a mom sometimes I feel like I have more attachment issues then my daughter. The fact that your baby is perfectly happy when you drop him off and when you pick him up is a good sign. He is secure. My daughter has just started to reach out for me and for other people. Although they recognize us as moms, there are still a few developmental things your son has to go through. Within the next couple of months you’ll get that reaction you want.
